Volcan Arenal- July 17-19.

How close can you get to an active volcano without actually seeing or hearing it? Pretty damn close, if you ask me. The coolest parts of the trip- our hotel, the Observatory Lodge, was a 30 minute rocky-as-hell ride away from civilization, and that much closer to the volcano's deadly lava flow. We were even closer than the nerves-of-steel backpackers fighting off the snakes at El Camping, somewhere off the pot-hole ridden gravel chunk road. It rained like a monsoon every night, leaving beautiful tropical floral debris all over the lodge's expansive grounds. Our section of rooms, the "Smithsonian", was a long hike from the main lodge and restaurant. This meant we enjoyed getting wet a lot. There was a wicked waterfall on the lodge's natural trail path, free guide included. I think the lodge owns the entire foot of the volcano.
The un-coolest part of the trip: the most action we got to see were the fire torches atop the fake waterfall at Baldi hot springs (Costa Rican version of Schlitterbahn). The upside: I have an excuse to visit more tropical locations in the hope of seeing an active volcano for the first time.
